Death toll less than last year

On Sunday, January 4 at 14:20 police attended to an accident scene on the N4 highway at Del Judor Proper.
A green Land Rover had rolled and one person in the vehicle had died on scene. The other two occupants were taken to hospital for treatment.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened against the driver of the Land Rover.

On Thursday, January 1 at 01:30 Witbank police attended to an accident in Watermeyer Street involving three Volkswagens.
Four passengers sustained slight injuries and one driver fled the scene.

On December 24, commuters found themselves in hospital as they were treated for their injuries.
A Toyota Quantum rolled on the N4 sending the vehicle and all the passengers over the embankment next to the highway.
The accident happened at approximately 10:30 near the KG Mall, towards eMalahleni.

It is still unclear how the accident happened, but it’s alleged a tyre burst on the Quantum, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
Emergency services attended to the injured.
As soon as a person was stabilised on a spine board, they were winched up by two towing services.

They were placed in various ambulances and transported to Witbank Provincial Hospital for further treatment
From December 1 to 30 there were 1 143 deaths in 924 crashes, compared to 1 168 deaths in 974 crashes over the same period last year.
“Of serious concern are the drivers who are fatigued, who drive under the influence of alcohol and drugs, undocumented drivers as well as unroadworthy vehicles,” said Peters.

As holiday makers make their way back home he urges all road users to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy.
“Other important safety tips are that drivers should adhere to the speed limit and everyone in the vehicle must buckle up,” said Peters.
Pedestrians were urged to cross roads safely, and refrain from drinking and walking.
