The injured Labrador pup has a new home
It has been just over six weeks and now Claire has a home to go to.
Ms Ester Muller has decided to adopt the pup that she brought in to Klipfontein Animal Clinic.
“I have grown attached to her ever since I picked her up and brought her in after that accident,” said Ms Ester Muller.
On May 29 Muller witnessed a six-month-old Labrador cross being run over, the red 4×4 allegedly stopped his vehicle, moved the dog to the side of the road, and drove off.
Muller was driving in Clarendon Street after dropping her son off at school that Friday when she came upon the injured dog lying alongside the road.
Muller, with the aid of Ms Liesl Rohm, took the injured dog to Klipfontein Animal Clinic where Dr Hawie Havelaar and his assistant Jantjie Tau did what they could to treat the animal’s wounds.
X-rays were taken at the veterinary clinic that same day and revealed that Claire had sustained a pelvic and femur-neck fracture.
“She had a fracture in the hip joint and we operated to repair the fracture and reattached the muscles,” said Dr Irene Kotzé, veterinary surgeon.
Dr Havelaar said in an interview some weeks ago, that the dog was recovering well and that he hoped that the joints would set in nicely.
About a week ago, Ms Michelle Lock from Pet Empowerment in Townships (PETS) Witbank contacted Muller asking her to foster the dog.
Michelle was faced with a decision which was easily swayed thanks to her compassion for Claire and told Michelle that she would rather like to adopt the Labrador pup, instead of fostering.
“She has grown on my wife’s heart and I think my wife’s love for animals helped her decision in adopting,” said Tinus, her husband.
Muller was excited to hear from the clinic last week, when she was given the good news that she could in fact adopt the pup and visited the clinic on Tuesday morning to finalise the adoption and welcome Claire into the Muller family.
“We are going to miss her, she kept us busy with her demands for attention,” said Dr Kotzé as she bid farewell to Claire.
