This news broke on Tuesday, July 28.
Sithole is one of four mayors who have been recalled. The others are Cllr Caroline Morajane (Lekwa), Cllr Tiny Mthimunye (Dr JS Moroka) and Cllr Bafana Ncongwane (Thaba Chweu).
Mr Sibusiso Themba, African National Congress (ANC) provincial spokesman said Cllr Lindiwe Mabona Ntshalintshali will be taking over the joystick of the municipality.
The Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) has over the past few months made assessments of the state of governance in the province with a particular focus on the state and its capacity to effectively respond to current challenges and implement manifesto priorities.
As the party work towards the 2016 local government elections they focussed their attention on local government and saw the shortfalls in the municipalities.
The PEC is now going back to their ‘back to basics’ campaign and will focus on service delivery.
The sacking of four ANC Mayors in Mpumalanga will have little impact on the dysfunctional municipalities is a strong statement made by the Democratic Alliance.
They are concerned that millions have been spent on Emalahleni’s administration under Mr Theo van Vuuren who was recently appointed as Acting Municipal Manager.
“This shows that the ANC house of cards in Mpumalanga is tumbling down. It cannot continue to force inept and uncaring mayors onto our local governments, who cripple the municipalities, and who enjoy the protection of the ANC machine,” said Cllr Lizelle Steyn from the DA.
She said now is the time for competent and skilled mayors to be appointed.
“Replacing one incompetent crony with another will not improve service delivery and will certainly have little impact on the dysfunctional municipalities,” Steyn said.
This is not the first time Cllr Sithole felt the ANC’s wrath.
On Tuesday, September 30 last year, the PEC suspended her and members of the mayoral committee for the duration of the intervention period. Mr Theo van Vuuren, now Acting Municipal Manager was given all Cllr Sithole’s decision making powers while he was administrator of the municipality.
