Possible identification of skeletal remains
Additional findings were made with regards to the skeleton found in the field along Mandela Street.
On September 29 a skeleton was found in the field at the intersection of Mandela and Linden streets.
The area was swiftly cordoned off and the skeleton was retrieved by police. The following day the crime scene was screened by police and additional teeth were recovered, soil samples were also taken along with other findings that might aid in the investigation. These were handed to the Victim Identification Centre (VIC), a subsection of police forensics.

Through investigation and testing it was discovered that the skeleton was that of a young adult.
Skeletal remains were found.
“Police have identified the sex of the skeleton but verification needs to be carried out,” said Mr Corrie Pieters, Deputy Director of Forensic Pathology Services, Department of Health, Nkangala District.
Pieters added that it appeared that dental work had been carried out on the person’s teeth, however this needs to be confirmed with the respective dental practise and doctor before positive identification can be made.

“The investigation will be an ongoing process carried out by the VIC and investigating officer,” said Pieters.
Capt Eddie Hall, Witbank Police spokesperson previously said that the police’s top priority right now regarding this case is to determine who the person was and their cause of death.
