Municipal workers from all branches of government from sanitation to Traffic official gathered in the Town Hall on January 27 when the municipal manager and the executive Mayor addressed the issue of unpaid salaries.
No strikes or protests took place as was originally believe. On Theo Van Vuuren’s Facebook page the following post was put up as a precaution.
“Please be informed that due to Municipal staff unrest this morning we are unable to attend to any outstanding complaints at present.
Members of the public are requested to avoid the Municipal Offices during this time. Caution should be used when in the CBD area,”
stated the post.
Reports also surfaced via the National Municipal Workers Union that employee’s were also unpaid in certain municipalities in Cape Town. However Theo van Vuuren responded the same day after the meeting in the Town Hall.
“It was not really a strike and the matters have been resolved, with all returning to normal during the day. There was a technical issue which delayed transfer of staff salaries for close to two days.”
With the record set straight the workers salaries have since been paid in.
“This matter has finally been resolved this morning and staff are receiving their salaries. However, unhappiness existed amongst staff as a number of them experienced debit orders bouncing as a result of the late payment. They were also concerned on the fact that not sufficient communication on this matter took place prior to today,” added Van Vuuren.
The statement concluded by saying that the meeting was held to address these concerns and undertakings.
“Some staff is still waiting for proof of payment from their banks whilst others have resumed their duties already. I expect that by tomorrow the situation will be normalised.”
