The notorious S-bends just outside eMalahleni claimed another two lives. Zaynaib and Zaid Mtshali aged nine and 13 lost their lives in a tragic accident.

The rainy morning of March 9 saw traffic moving slowly due to a collision between a white Toyota Hilux that was travelling from eMalahleni’s direction and a silver Mercedes Benz coming from Johannesburg’s direction.

“The Mercedes Benz driver, Mr Thokozani Mtshali was trying to dodge a tyre in the middle of the road when he swerved and apparently lost control of his vehicle and collided with the bakkie,” said Russel Meiring ER24’s spokesperson.

The white Toyota Hilux collided with a silver coloured Mercedes Benz on March 9 on the N12 highway.

The driver of the bakkie sustained a knee injury with pains in his back and chest whilst Thokozani was rushed to eMalahleni Private Hospital by JD Med ambulance services where he is still hospitalised.
There was only one person in the bakkie and three people in the Mercedes.
The front of the bakkie was damaged and the Mercedes Benz was heavily damaged on the left hand side of the vehicle, both vehicles are considered write-offs.

Police, JD Med, Langamed Emergency Management Services and ER24 were some of the emergency vehicles that attended the scene.
An uncle to Zaid and Zaynaib, Mr Mbongeni Mtshali said the family was saddened by the loss of the children.
The pain sustained by the family was also felt by the staff members of Laerskool Panorama where the two children attended school.

There was a memorial service held on March 11 where learners gathered to share the beautiful memories of these students.

One of Zaid’s friends described the grade seven pupil as a medicine to boredom.
Principal of the school Mr Ben Lamprecht also added that they were lovely students and will be surely missed.

“We see life as a candle that burns with a little flame and when the candle burns out, it marks a beginning of a new day where there is brightness. This too shall pass where you will receive your brightness. Please accept the condolences from our school. Your loss is our loss. We wish you all the best,” said Lamprecht.

The young souls were laid to rest on March 13 at their home in Phola, Ogies.
