Municipality responds to garbage collection

“After improving our availability of vehicles for refuge collection, we ran into a labour problem this week and a resulting strike by the 200 plus labourers"

Last week it was reported that the municipality has a fleet of 16 garbage trucks ready to collect rubbish and that the service has in the past suffered from financial constraints.

However a new week has started and it seems that garbage collection day has come and gone in some suburbs with no trucks in sight. Driving to work the growing islands of trash next to the road is evidence of that. Mr Theo Van Vuuren Municipal manager commented on the reason for this.

“After improving our availability of vehicles for refuge collection, we ran into a labour problem this week and a resulting strike by the 200 plus labourers responsible for daily collection. The management is doing their utmost to address the concerns raised and in the meantime I gave permission to contract service providers to prevent a total standstill in waste collection. We apologise for any inconvenience which may have been caused and are doing our utmost to resolve this issue still in this week,” said Van Vuuren.

According to the statement residents in the affected areas can hopefully expect their rubbish to be removed by the end of the week.
