Burglars looking to do some ‘home’ shopping

With the festive season well under way burglars have taken the term shop at home a little too literal.

With the festive season well under way burglars have taken the term shop at home a little too literal.

On December 16, Mr Jacques Benadie’s neighbour alerted him of someone on his property, that following evening burglars stole one of his security beams.

“At 23:50 my next door neighbour called me to inform me that his dog was poisoned,” said Benadie.

Benadie was told that an unknown person had jumped his wall seeking cover. Benadie arrived at home nine minutes later to find no one at his premises, however there were signs that there had been people in his yard.

Coke caps were used as markers in Mr Jacques Benadie’s yard.

“There wee tracks at the Koi pond, I surveyed my premises for poison but could not find any,” said Benadie.

Benadie got in contact with his neighbours alerting them to be on the lookout for poison and warned them to be cautious of their animals.

“One of my neighbours informed me that there were two men in the area earlier claiming to be looking for the owner of the dogs as they were looking to purchase the same breed,” he said.

Benadie recalls that two weeks prior there were four men walking from house to house looking over the walls, they were followed towards the taxi rank where the men split up and disappeared into the crowd.

On December 17 the culprits returned to Benadie’s yard where they tripped one of the perimeter beams, after tripping the beam the culprits broke the sensor off the wall and took it with them leaving his yard.

Ms Susan Fernandes Da Costa claimed that she found bottle marking her yard in Roy Hector Street on December 16, this was on Witbank Wall of Fame and Shame’s Facebook page.

A number of residents in the area of Extension 16 are now on high alert thanks to Benadie’s warning that the area has become a target for house burglaries.

Mr Hermann Keyser said on Facebook that residents should remove any items from their yards that could be seen as markers, and should report sightings and warn neighbours of any activity in the area.

Capt JJJ Viljoen reacted to the post on social media advising the community of sector 4 to take his number (082 465 3624) as he is the sector manager of Sector 4 which includes Roy Hector Street, Klipfontein Dam and part of Extension 16.

He said that the community policing forum is active in the area and along with the community can help to reduce the crime in the area.

He advised the residents to join the CPF in patrol and to be on alert in the area, he also advised them to keep in contact with one another to create awareness in the area.
