A man driving along the highway at 169km/h found out the hard way that speeding is in fact against the law.
On February 3 at about 07:15, a 38-year-old man was driving at 169km/h on the N4 Highway between eMalahleni and Middelburg when he was brought to a stop by Highway Patrol and taken into custody and his vehicle impounded for breaking the law.
In terms of the National Road Traffic Act, 1989 and its regulations the speed limits are 60 km/h on a public road within an urban area, 100 km/h on public road outside an urban area which is not a freeway, and 120 km/h on every freeway.

Bear in mind that road traffic signs can also prescribe speed limits which may be lower or higher than the general limits applicable on a public road. And that traffic officers may depict the laws of the road.
“Let this be a warning to the public not to speed in town nor on the highway, exceeding the speed limit is a punishable offence and exceeding it at more than 40km/h will result in your immediate arrest,” said Capt Eddie Hall, Witbank Police communications liaison.
