Fraud cases involving cell phones on the increase

The police reported that over ten cases were reported over a period of one week, and the cases involve cell phone calls.

An increased number of fraud cases at Vosman Police Station have been noted.

The police reported that over ten cases were reported over a period of one week, and the cases involve cell phone calls.

The recent case reported, was on February 23 at about 07:30 where an amount of R10 000 was transferred without the owner, Mr Nqcwele Siyabonga Mhlongo (24) being aware. According to the police it appears that Mr Mhlongo received a call on February 16 from a lady who introduced herself as Portia Simelane from Standard Bank. She then gave him a reference number saying his account was having a problem and that he must use that number to resolve the matter.

On February 23 she called the victim once again and said he’s account was being defrauded and asked for his ID confirmation and promised to assist him.

Soon after that an SMS reported that R5000-00 was withdrawn and later another R5000-00. When the victim went to the bank, they were shocked to see deduction of this nature one after another.

The Station Commander of Vosman SAPS, Brigadier Eric Masiya is appealing to the community to refrain from confirming their details on cell phones as they should rather go into the bank.

Detective Constable Shelly Skhosana is the investigating officer. She can be reached at: 013 659 8442 or cell phone 081 8525 119

For any other enquiries please contact Captain Klaas Maloka on 013 659 8423 or 079 891 4822.
