While registered hawkers at the local taxi rank are happily selling their wares, they are at the same time not happy about other hawkers selling on the streets.
The registered hawkers have raised their concerns about some hawkers whom they claimed are not even registered and are selling braai mealies on the streets.
The hawkers claim that they were stopped from cooking using big gas cylinders in their stalls. They also alleged that their big gas cylinders were taken by members of the Law Enforcements units and never returned to them after they were advised to use small gas cylinders.

Why it is okay for others to make fire on the streets while we were stopped from doing so? It seems the by-laws are enforced to us but to others the municipality turn a blind eye.
A questionnaire was sent to Mr Kingdom Mabuza, municipality communication manager about the matter. His response was that he has spoken to the bylaws section and was told that the only time they confiscate gas cylinders and goods of hawkers, is when they do not have a permit to trade or when they have transgressed bylaws.
“The Emalahleni Local Municipality encourages hawkers to come and apply for permits which last for a year. Before hawkers are given permits, our officials visit the area to check if it is suitable for trading or not. Our law enforcement agency will continue to confiscate goods of hawkers who trade from spaces which are not suitable,” explained Mr Mabuza.
