
Five suspects awaiting trial escaped from the Secunda Police Station holding cells.
On April 8 the suspects were reported to have jumped the fence at around 10:00. They were last seen by a community member who saw them at the station perimeter fleeing the area.
The circumstances surrounding their escape remain a subject of investigation. Police have in the meantime launched a manhunt for the escapees.
Police released the following information regarding the five escapees.
Karabo Mkhwanazi 29-years-old, arrested for shoplifting.
Buti Absalom Nxumalo 26-years-old, arrested for shoplifting.
Fanyana Vincent Jiyane 30-years-old, arrested for rape and common robbery.
Siyanda Dlamini 34-years-old, arrested for shoplifting.
Dumisani Simon Hlatshwayo 31-years-old, arrested for shoplifting.
Hlatswayo has since been rearrested.
The Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga Lieut Gen Mondli Zuma has issued an instruction to the police at Secunda that they must make sure that the escapees are captured soon before the community comes to harm.
If the suspects are seen, the community is warned not to confront them but contact Det Lieut Col Dumisani Mbokane at 082 556 5630, or the crime stop number at 08600 10111, the Secunda Police Station on 017 624 2242/3/4 or the nearest police station with the relevant information.
