Mr Danie de Klerk was returning home to Pretoria when a man walked out in front of his car on the N4 Highway.
The accident occurred on April 14 at about 18:45.
“I was returning home from Sodwana along with my brother who drove ahead when this man walked out in front of my bakkie,” he said.
“Luckily I wasn’t going that fast as I was towing a trailer behind me,” he added.
“I dropped off some passengers and noticed this guy walking into traffic. I hit my hazards to try warn people of him and stopped my taxi,” said Mr Themba Mathabela, a taxi driver and witness to the accident.
He claims that he and his passengers made several attempts to keep the man from walking into traffic but he managed to free himself from their hold and was hit by De Klerk’s bakkie.
“He said he wanted to kill himself,” said Mathabela.
Paramedics attended the scene and treated the man’s wounds.
“He should be okay, it looks like he only got some lacerations to the head and arms,” said De Klerk.
Mathbela approached De Klerk and told him that he should go to the nearest police station where they could both report the incident. He advised De Klerk to follow him to the station as he was not familiar with the area.
