Car gets stolen after placing an advert to sell the vehicle

Operation Festive Season roadblock yielded good results which saw 24 national road traffic fines being issued.

The search is on; police are looking for a man that stole a vehicle at Klipfontein.

A 37-year-old woman’s husband posted an advert to sell a Renault Laguna with registration number FXH 189 MP. The woman received a call from a man that was interested in buying the car. The woman arranged to meet with the potential buyer at Klipfontein.

On Tuesday morning, January 2 they met and the woman alleged the buyer was fond of the car. He told the woman that he has transferred the amount of R37 000 into her bank account. The man took car keys and drove off.

When the woman went to the bank to enquire, she found out that the money was not deposited. The complainant then went to Witbank SAPS to open a theft of motor vehicle case against the man. She alleged that the man is no longer taking her calls.

“The car has not been found yet, we are still searching for it,” said the complainant.

Witbank police Communication Officer, Capt Eddie Hall said Witbank SAPS were experiencing a major problem with fraud on internet sales groups, especially with the buying and selling of cars.

Capt Hall provided preventative hints which will assist potential sellers. If it is too good to be true, guess what? It is a scam; Try to meet in a safe, public place and bring a friend; Agree on a plan.

If it changes at the last minute, cancel; If you are intimidated or made to feel guilty, leave immediately; Never give out financial details to a stranger. Preventative hints for buyers are, if you are buying a vehicle first check that the vehicle’s serial number on the engine corresponds with the number in the papers of the car and make sure you verify vehicle identification numbers (VIN),; Walk away if the seller requests a deposit; Only pay via EFT if you do not feel comfortable carrying a lot of cash.
