Truck driver gets hijacked by ‘police’

A white Hino truck was hijacked at one of the truck hijacking hi-spot zones, the N12 highway.

On Tuesday evening, February 20 a man was travelling to Johannesburg when he was stopped by a vehicle with blue lights at the N4/N12 split. Two suspects approached him and were apparently wearing police uniform and reflector vests.

After a short while a third suspect, not wearing uniform came along. The truck driver was threatened with a firearm and he was instructed to move to the passenger’s seat.

Minutes later a fourth suspect came along. The man’s legs were tied with a rope and they drove with him to Kendal. His truck was hijacked and his cell phone was taken by the suspects.

Witbank Police Station spokesperson Capt Eddie Hall said Witbank is in the top 10 for truck hijacking cases, especially at the N12 highway which is from Witbank to Johannesburg. At this point our city is a priority town.

Capt Hall also advised truck drivers to be careful when being stopped by a vehicle with blue lights.

“Make sure it is a clearly marked vehicle. If you are still unsure rather drive to the nearest police station to verify.”
