Suspect speeds off after killing pedestrian

A man died on the N4 highway after a driver knocked him over and sped off

A man died on the N4 highway after a driver knocked him over and sped off.

On Friday, January 18 a man was crossing the highway when a vehicle drove him over.

Allegedly the driver didn’t even bother to stop and he just sped off.

“I saw what happened and how the driver just sped off; I was amazed at how many people just carried on driving while this man was lying in the middle of the road. I then decided to stop my vehicle here in an attempt to stop the traffic,” explained the man that was travelling behind the suspects’ vehicle.

One of the drivers from a tow truck service that attended to the scene quickly took after the suspect.

Paramedics from JD Med attended to the scene and tried to save the man’s life. However he sadly passed away and was declared dead on scene.

The deceased was identified as Mr Mandla Amos Matshika.

The driver of the vehicle however left behind some breadcrumbs, his side mirror broke off during the incident.

The vehicle that the suspect was travelling in, is a silver Mercedes Benz.

The driver was caught and taken to Witbank General Hospital to get his blood tested.

A case of culpable homicide was opened against him.

The incident occurred at 18:15, but when pathology services failed to show up by 20:30, the body was removed from the road.
