Plus minus 15 Pakistani national males allegedly killed a Malawian man and brutally assaulted another.
On Friday afternoon, February 1 at about 15:00 about 15 Pakistani national males allegedly assaulted two Malawian nationals with iron rods.
“One of the Malawian males had been killed, and the other one is seriously injured,” stated Phola Police Station Communications Officer, Thabang Petros Nthuli.
It is alleged that these two Malawians were employed by one of the Pakistani men.
They worked as general workers in his shop.
“Allegedly the Pakistani men always locked the Malawians up in the shop when they left. And what happened on this day was that the Pakistani males returned and found that the two Malawians tried to leave and head back to Malawi. They also allegedly took some of the Pakistani men’s goods from the shop,” explained Nthuli, Communications Officer.
It seams that the Pakistanis decided to take matters into their own hands instead of following the correct channels by phoning the police.
The Pakistanis started to assault the two Malawian men with metal rods.
The community of Phola was infuriated when they heard that the Pakistani men killed a Malawian.
“The residents of Phola were very angry, they started to break all the Pakistanis’ shop windows and doors. There were six Pakistani owned shops in a row and the community trashed all of them and took everything. Some community members even forced themselves through the roofs of the shops,” Nthuli concluded.
Up until date, one Pakistani male had been arrested and is detained at the Phola Police Station.
A case of murder has been opened against him.
The surviving victim was taken to Witbank General Hospital with serious injuries.
