Teacher who ‘forgets’ a six year old child in a strong room gets bail

She will appear again on Friday, April 26.

The Blackhill Primary School teacher who ‘locked’ a six-year-old Grade one child in a strong room is out on a R2 000 bail.

The teacher, Ms Fikile Nkambule, (30) was arrested on Friday, February 22 after the child spends the night in the dark strong room.

The parents reported the child missing after he failed to arrive home at the usual time on Wednesday, February 20.

The child was found in the strong room and the teacher admitted that she had forgotten about him.

The reason why the child was kept in strong room is not known.

She was charged for child neglect and kidnapping.

During the bail application for the teacher some conditions were set by Magistrate Mdumiseni Mavuso after it was found that Nkambule is a first time offender and has no previous convictions and that she has a permanent address and employment.

It was stated that the teacher also handed herself to the police after she was told that she was wanted.

She is expected not to set foot at the school and not to have any contact with the minor until after the case.

The teacher is a mother of a nine-year-old child and is also four months pregnant.

She will appear again on Friday, April 26.

The Department of Education is offering counselling to the family of the child and the teacher is under suspension.
