Local hip hop legend in the making

The 22-year-old local hip hop artist, born and bred in Hlalanikahle Phase 4, has his own special kind of hip hop

Philani Lukhele, better known as 6AWOL, will make his way to the top with his music talent.

The 22-year-old local hip hop artist, born and bred in Hlalanikahle Phase 4, has his own special kind of hip hop.

He does not rap about girls, money and booze but about life and how he has dealt with difficult situations in his life.

“It is a way to also encourage my peers to never give up on life or on anything they set their minds to,” Lukhele said.

He started making music in 2007 and is also a song writer and vocalist.

He highlighted that he chose the hip hop music genre because it is universal and speaks to most people around the world.

He added: “I communicate through music which is something a lot of young people like and they are able to relate their own feelings and emotions with my music.”

Lukhele said he does not receive support from his family.

His family would like him to get a paying job so that he can contribute at home.

He completed school in 2016 and underwent a skills programme at the National Youth Development Agency.

Since thereafter he has been focusing on his music.

He said that his family does not have money to help him further his studies and he has applied for a few learnerships so that he can get some money to cover expenses at home.

Part of his future plans is to get money to invest in his music career. He wants to register with SAMRO and market himself so that he can be internationally recognised as a hip hop music artist.
