Joseph is well on the good path
Joseph is part of the Greater Emalahleni project, run by Past Given and they are collecting blankets as part of their ‘winter warmer’ project.
Joseph Nchabeleng was in the news last month about his story and his journey to a full recovery.
He was addicted to heroin for the greater part of his life, starting in school.
Past Given Mavasa from Greater Emalahleni got ‘a hold of him’ and he is now well on his way to a full recovery.
He now has his own place; one of his biggest dreams came true.
“I got a place. I love it so much. It’s my very first dream,” his excitement echoed through the phone.“I don’t even have a bed. I have blankets that I sleep on. If I have maize and eggs I have food.”
He added that he still has a long road ahead of him, detoxing from the drugs and meeting his appointments at SANCA (South African National Council on Alcoholism).
He said that he still has eight meetings left.
Joseph has his head on the right path and he is only focused on the road ahead of him.
He said that where he lives is safe, “I don’t go around. I am busy during the day, then I go to my place. I have had a lot of time to think about my life. I am happy where I am,” he added.
When asked what he eats, he said: “I have one pot. I make pap. Gooi it in a plastic, then I cook the eggs. Then I eat it. It will all come right. I am taking it one step at a time.”
“I was in grade 10 when I was introduced to heroin when I met with a Nigerian national and I did very stupid things. I was in Witbank Technical College but dropped out because of these things. My parents saw that the problem is only getting worse and they ended up kicking me out. I ran to Johannesburg for two to three years but came back. I was clean for about a year and six months but my dad and I fought continuously. I think that contributed to the problem and I just started using again,” Joseph said in a previous article. “It’s not a life sleeping on the streets. When you walk the streets, you see a bicycle in the yard. You want to jump the wall, steal the bike and sell it because it will get you a fix.”
Joseph is part of the Greater Emalahleni project, run by Past Given and they are collecting blankets as part of their ‘winter warmer’ project.
They will hand it out on July 18 during Mandela day and are asking for any spare or old blankets as a donation.
