Women are the real architects of society

This historic march was a turning point in the role of women in the struggle for freedom

“If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.” — Margaret Thatcher.

South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August, as a tribute to the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956 in protest against the extension of the pass laws to women.

This historic march was a turning point in the role of women in the struggle for freedom.

There are various activities planned throughout the month to honour women.

WITBANK NEWS caught up with Executive Mayor of Emalahleni, Cllr Linah Malatjie who was the keynote speaker at business breakfast hosted at Tsogo Sun The Venue on Tuesday, August 6.

Cllr Malatjie said women lack networking opportunities like these.

“It is important to share information, praise and encourage one another. We should get together for breakfast more often,” she aimed her statement to the ladies amongst the guests.

The mayor said she is still very concerned about the fact that women are under presented in top executive and board positions.

Her mayoral committee consists of four women and two men.

She highlighted areas she feels needs urgent attention, namely inequality and gender based violence.

Cllr Malatjie invited women to link in with the municipality in three huge projects they plan in the near future.

She said they are focussing on a mining museum, turning Witbank Dam into a sustainable asset and the resuscitation of Highveld Steel.

Women’s month is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on women’s achievements.

Cllr Malatjie said women working together can move Emalahleni forward and turn this Highveld gem into the heartbeat of Mpumalanga.
