Robbers leave without a cent
The driver of the cash van drove straight back to the police station
The weekend started with some explosive action.
A foiled heist on Friday, August 30 left a bakkie burned out and some bullets strewn all over on the corner of OR Tambo Road and Amsterdam Street.
Mr Johnny Moore, from The Courier Guy said he was in the back office at around 10:15 when he heard two shots that he initially thought was a car backfiring.
But when the rest of the shots followed, he and his colleagues crawled to the window to see what was happening.
“I saw a charcoal coloured Ranger with four men dressed in overalls and balaclavas on idling next to a Mahindra bakkie that crashed into a road sign. A man got out of the Mahindra bakkie and jumped onto the Ranger. Another man picked something up from the back of the Ranger and threw it into the Mahindra and it exploded.
Sgt David Ratau, police spokesperson said that a Fidelity Cash Solutions cash van was escorted by a marked police vehicle from a safe distance.
“The driver of the cash van saw two occupants in a Mahindra bakkie coming from the side of OR Tambo Road. He noticed they were wearing balaclavas. He kept his wits and turned into Amsterdam Street. The driver of the Mahindra skipped the red robot and bumped the cash van. With the impact of the collision the Mahindra ended up against a road sign.”
The driver of the cash van drove straight back to the police station.
Capt Oupa Masilela who escorted the cash van, noticed two double cab bakkies pass him on high speed and thought there had been an accident.
When he got closer, he noticed the occupants of the bakkie firing at the cash van.
As he tried to reverse, he hit a Golf GTI that was used by the robbers to block off the traffic.
He put his car in gear again and also turned into Amsterdam Street.
The robbers shot out two of the wheels of the police car and he had to get out of the car and take cover.
From his cover he shot back at the robbers.
It was later established that the robbers also blocked off the road at the intersection at Mona Street while the attempted heist was in progress.
The robbers left the scene without a cent and luckily no one was injured in the foiled heist.
By the time going to print there was no response from Fidelity Cash Solutions.
