I survived an attempted hijacking

45 cars are hijacked every day in South Africa and the majority of these occur in home driveways

Ms Rashmi Naidoo who lives in Centaury Street in Reyno Ridge, managed to escape (and survive) an attempted hijacking.

“I was on my way home from work. I always get home a bit late because the traffic is very bad in front of the police office – but everything was normal up until that point,” Naidoo explained, “I pulled my car into my driveway and pushed the button to open the gate. The minute the gate started opening, all hell broke loose.”

Naidoo told how, presumably upon hearing the gate and garage opening, three strange men came streaming out of her house as she pulled up in front of the garage.

“They immediately ran to my driver side door and tried to pull it open. Luckily, I still had the door locked – so they couldn’t access it. I didn’t see any weapons. All I did was throw my car into reverse and reverse back out of my drive way and into Centaury Street as quickly as possible.”

Naidoo says, once outside of her own property, she raced off and drove around – winding through the streets of Reyno Ridge whilst calling her security company.

“I drove around until the security company let me know that they were at my house, and then I went back. The security company couldn’t find any trace of the three men; they told me they think that they ran off after I gave them a fright when I returned home. The only thing that would make you think anybody had been there at all is that they had ransacked my house. I don’t think they had time to steal anything because nothing of value was gone; just two bottles of brandy which had been on the kitchen counter. But they sure made a mess,” Naidoo recounted.

“I’m just glad they didn’t take my television – I can’t live without my series!” Naidoo joked in conclusion.

45 cars are hijacked every day in South Africa and the majority of these occur in home driveways.

According to Briefly.co.za, the five most hijacked cars in South Africa include the Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Hilux and other Toyota models, Ford Ranger, BMW X5 and Chevrolet Spark.

The website says these models are selected based on their demand in the market and the prospect of valuable items being found in luxury vehicles.
