Open your heart for Megan
Megan’s family does not have medical aid and the cost estimated for the operation is R600 000
All the Van Rheede van Oudtshoorn family wants for Christmas is enough money for their four-year-old daughter to undergo a lifesaving operation.
Megan was only 18 months old when she was diagnosed with progressive congenital scoliosis.
Scoliosis is a rare condition that is mainly detected in children at the age between 10 and 15.
In Megan’s case it is very rare as only 1% of children from new born to three years have this condition.
Megan’s spine curves abnormally.
Children born or later diagnosed with this condition has a spinal curve of about 30 degrees, but in Megan’s case her spinal curve is greater than 90 degrees.
“Megan requires an operation to stabilise her spine and prevent any further progressive deformity,” mom Marilanda said.
Another worry is that Megan’s spine is taking up a lot of space and is now pushing against her heart and lungs and preventing normal growth of these vital organs.
Megan’s family does not have medical aid and the cost estimated for the operation is R600 000.
That does not even include after care, a special bed and a brace she will need after surgery.
Megan will also need physiotherapy until her muscles adjust.
Megan looked like a little fairy and she confidently led the interview.
Her huge brown eyes speak volumes and it is clear that she understands that she is a little different than other kids.
“I just want the doctor to fix my spine so that I can play with all the friends in the big wide world,” she said while glancing through the photos taken of her.
