Master beatboxer brings home South African title

Master beatboxer Levis Lewis is taking the beatboxing world by storm with his unique voice.

Online English teacher and master beatboxer Levis Lewis recently returned home with a South African title after winning the South African Beatbox Championships 7 to Smoke Battle.

The fast-paced, high-intensity contest took place in Johannesburg on September 11.

“It was so much fun,” said the 24-year-old artist, whose voice expertly mimics musical instruments.

Beatboxing is a technical genre in its own right, with artists using breathing techniques, lips, mouths, tongues, teeth and throats to produce music.
The practice is known as multivocalism and is found in many vocal traditions throughout the world.

Lewis’ elder brothers used to beatbox, and he first picked it up as a 10-year-old.
His mother, Nicolene Lewis, said she knew from the start that Levis was a ‘stage baby’.

“Levis has always been the performer, singing from an early stage,” she said.

“Art is a genre that should never be judged. It is a freedom of expression,” Lewis said after performing a song for Witbank News.

He explained that music evolves throughout one’s journey in life.

“Hardship and emotional rollercoasters moulded my music. It is a map of my life,” the young artist said.

Lewis also plays the piano and recently started playing the guitar. He wants to pursue a full-time musical career and aims to visit schools to promote self-expression through music.

“Everyone is connected through social media; however, it is such a lonely and isolated place to be if you do not have a voice. Music transcends spoken language. Through music, you can communicate in a way you can’t through words,” he said.

The magic-voiced artist is currently looking for gigs around eMalahleni to promote the art form.
