Clean water goes down the drain at Moth Cottages

The water has been leaking since Friday, January 3.

The water going down the drain at the Moth Sound Memory Cottages is enough to fill a swimming pool.

The drains inside the residence cannot take the amount of water that flows from the leakage above anymore.

The water has been leaking since Friday, January 3.

The matter was reported immediately to the Emalahleni Local Municipality by the maintenance officer at the cottages, Mr Chris Steynberg.

“Officers from the municipality came to check the leak on Saturday, January 4, and they told us that the leak is on our property so they cannot do anything and they left,” said Mr Steynberg.
He continued to say: “Later, I realised that the leak is outside the meter box so the leak is on the municipality’s property, so they need to fix it. Our property is inside the meter box not outside of it. I reported again and I was told they will come on Monday, January 6, but they did not come.”

The water flows and gets inside the Moth Sound Memory Cottages’ residence
He also highlighted that the elderly residents are not safe when so much water flows inside the residence because they may slip on the wet floor.

Manager at the cottages, Ms Betty Grove, stated that since the leak, they have been having a water shortage.

“We have water tanks to store water in, but sometimes the elderly residents have to go with a small bucket to get water from the tank to flush a toilet.”

One of the elderly residents, Ms Elda Badenhorst, said that it is hard for them to go fetch water because they have become fragile.

The water from the leakage flows into the property and follows a path to the drains.

“The problem has affected us so badly that sometimes we cannot take a shower at 05:00 in the afternoon because there might be no water.”

Emalahleni Local Municipality spokesperson, Mr Lebohang Mofokeng, has not yet responded to the matter.
