TP Sililo goes green for Arbor Month
TP Sililo Secondary School learners planting wild olive trees during the Arbor Month initiative.
The future of Emalahleni’s environment took root at TP Sililo Secondary School in Tasbet Park on September 7, as learners swapped the classroom for the outdoors and took part in an Arbor Month tree-planting initiative.
The initiative was hosted by the Kakarambha Foundation in partnership with Emalahleni Local Municipality and focused on teaching young people why trees matter and how communities can play a role in protecting the environment.
School principal Herbert Mkandawiri welcomed the initiative, saying the programme gave learners valuable knowledge about the importance of trees and environmental conservation.
Kakarambha Foundation representative Thando Masango highlighted the importance of partnerships in bringing environmental education to communities.
He said the initiative carries particular significance in Mpumalanga, where mining and coal production are major features of the provincial economy.
The message from the municipality was equally focused on the future.
