Mpumalanga gives 200 young people a route into real estate
A provincial initiative will equip 200 young people with property management skills and practical experience to help them enter the property industry.
A provincial government initiative will build skills and create pathways into the property industry for young people in Mpumalanga.
The programme, officially launched on September 2, will benefit 200 young people from Ehlanzeni, Gert Sibande and Nkangala.
Participants will work towards an NQF Level 4 qualification in property management while gaining practical experience through placements with established property companies.
The initiative is being driven through a partnership between the Office of the Premier, Services SETA and the Property Practitioners Regulatory Authority.
Career-building opportunity
Mpumalanga MEC for public works, roads and transport Thulasizwe Thomo, speaking on behalf of Premier Mandla Ndlovu, said the programme should be viewed as a career-building opportunity rather than simply another training intervention.
“We want these young people to leave this programme with more than a certificate. They must leave with skills, confidence and the ability to compete for opportunities in the property economy.”
Thomo urged the beneficiaries to take responsibility for making the most of the opportunity, saying their commitment would ultimately determine how far the programme could take them.
Broadening industry access
Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane, who delivered the keynote address, placed the initiative within the wider transformation of South Africa’s property sector.
She said meaningful transformation required investment in young people who could eventually occupy professional and leadership positions across the industry.
“The future of the property sector must include young South Africans who have the knowledge and professional preparation to participate at every level of the industry.”
Simelane said the country needed to broaden access to opportunities for people who had historically been excluded from the property economy.
