Provincial police commissioner wants rotten apples out

All six suspects were granted bail of R2 000 each and the case was postponed to March 4.

The Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, has strongly condemned the acts of criminality by SAPS members more so as members of the police, a former police officer, as well as a member of a Community Police Forum that appeared at Witbank Magistrate’s Court on a suspected case of corruption.

All six suspects were granted bail of R2 000 each and the case was postponed to March 4.

Their court appearance follows an incident which occurred on August 29 last year whereby the suspects entered a furniture shop in the Central Business District.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Brig Leonard Hlathi reports allege that three of the suspects were dressed in police uniform and the other four were wearing civilian clothes.

The men informed the owner of the business that they are searching the shop and they are specifically looking for drugs. During the search, drugs were indeed found and confiscated together with an amount of about R86 000 cash.

The business owner and two of his employees were arrested.

However at the police station the drugs mysteriously disappeared and an amount of R36 000 was allegedly given back to the owner of the business.

He immediately reported the matter and after an intensive investigation the six suspects were arrested.
