Nkangala TVET students want their NSFAS allowances

Students believed that the visit was not related to the grievances they have been protesting for such as the lack of NSFAS allowances distributed to students

Students at Nkangala Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College eMalahleni campus are still going on with protest action until their grievances are attended to.

WITBANK NEWS reported previously that on Tuesday, March 10, representatives from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) came to visit the students.

Students were hopeful that their grievances will be heard and something will be done.

Students believed that the visit was not related to the grievances they have been protesting for such as the lack of NSFAS allowances distributed to students.

The representatives were allegedly chased away when students began to sing toyi-toyi songs.

A student at Nkangala TVET College, Karabo Kgwetiane, said: “The NSFAS representatives only told us on how to protect our passwords and how to log into our NSFAS accounts. We were frustrated on why they come here to tell us about things we know, where else there are issues of not getting our allowances not being addressed.”

Student Representative Council (SRC) academic officer, Lebogang Mokoena, said on Tuesday, March 10, that all students asked the NSFAS representatives questions relating to the lack of distribution of allowances.

“They did not give us answers regarding how students are supposed to be productive when they do not have funds for food, transport, accommodation and other necessities. They did not give us any answers on when we will get our allowances,” Lebogang explained.

The students have been protesting for NSFAS allowances and assistance with accommodation for about four weeks.

The Nkangala TVET College communications office refused to comment on the matter.
