The police continue to catch those who roam the streets during the national lockdown and those who gain entry into South Africa without any documentation.
Eight Pakistan nationals that were identified as illegal immigrants were arrested as they were travelling on the N12 highway.
Phola Police officials together with Middelburg Flying Squad spotted a silver-grey Toyota Avanza travelling on the N12 near Phola/Ogies off-ramp towards Johannesburg on Saturday, April 4 at around 20:45.
After the officials managed to stop the vehicle near the off-ramp, they discovered that there were eight undocumented Pakistan national passengers inside the vehicle and the driver was a South African citizen male.
They were escorted to Phola Police Station where they were arrested and then detained at Witbank Police Station.
Phola Police Station communications officer Constable Thabang Ntuli highlighted the reason for detaining the arrestees at Witbank Police Station.
“They were detained at Witbank SAPS because our cells at Phola Police Station are not in good condition.”
He also said that the driver of the vehicle fled before entering the police station but the vehicle was seized and booked in.
He also advises the community of the following: “People need to comply with the COVID-19 regulations and stop taking the situation lightly and making jokes about it. Tavern owners must stop selling liquor in secret. Lastly, the community should stop playing with firearms and it is becoming a tendency and people are not reporting the culprits up until someone is shot.”
