A senior citizens’ desperate circumstances concerning abnormal municipal rates continue, despite fruitless trials to consult with the municipal management to have them adjusted.

After receiving a message that left her frustrated from the municipality to inform her that she owes R14 000 on Thursday, February 27 Gogo Mgadi said her trials to have them adjusted afterwards were unsuccessful.

“After I got the message earlier this month, I went to the municipality to consult with the management so that I can also have my rates adjusted as I am a pensioner of which I revealed during the consultation as advised on the previous article reported by WITBANK NEWS. I was told he is not around and had to come back the following day after 08:00 but still could not find him and gave up.”

As previously reported, Gogo Mgadi revealed that she was confused by the extreme escalation of the municipal rates.

“Initially it was R5 000, I paid half of it because I could not afford to pay the whole amount. Thereafter it increased the following month to R6 000, then jumped R7 000 to R8 000, from there the rates escalated to R11 000. I am unemployed and my child here is supposed to be at school, how am I going to take her with this high water expense,” she explained.

Gogo Mgadi said she called the municipality to explain how come her water rates are high and they continued to say it’s a leakage.

“They did not come to check why; they said that I have leakage but how because last time it was replaced. I am now confused and do not know what to do.”

The municipality spokesperson Mr Lebo Mofokeng said most of the employees at the municipality are no available as a result of the lockdown as advised by the president, “however the matter will be handed over to relevant department after the lockdown, for now, we are still waiting for the president to give us new arrangements.”
