To aid nearby communities and to respond to the call made by our president, Cyril Ramaphosa – Matla Coal Mine donated 180 food parcels to households within the Emalahleni Local Municipality. Each parcel contained tinned fish, baked beans, maize meal, cooking oil, sugar, tea bags, rice and soups.

Poverty and hunger are two obstacles South Africa had grappled with long before the pandemic shook our nation. Then, as a result of the lockdown, levels of poverty and malnutrition increased at a rapid pace with even more of our population going to bed hungry.

In response to this ever-increasing problem, Exxaro – one of South Africa’s largest black-empowered resource companies – has stepped in to assist communities impacted by COVID-19 by providing food parcels where they are needed most.

“The arrival of the pandemic has brought widespread distress and uncertainty. Those affected have, understandably, been struggling to provide food for their families considering their lives were turned upside down, overnight,” said Exxaro’s spokesperson and Executive Head of Stakeholder Affairs, Mzila Mthenjane.

“Our commitment to the nation and our people is the driving force we need to continue working tirelessly during these trying times. We’re doing our part to ensure the country’s well-being and productivity when it matters the most” he added.

One of the residents, 72-year-old Sophie Mahlangu, was incredibly grateful for her pack. “We thank you, Exxaro, for taking care of us during these challenging times. We didn’t expect this, and it will make a difference to my family,” she said.

The Leeuwpan Mine team also joined this worthy cause and teamed up with the Victor Khanye Local Municipality to distribute food parcels in the Delmas area. In Belfast, the team have given their host farming communities food parcels and blankets for sustenance during this period.

As a corporate citizen of South Africa, Exxaro aims to be a key partner in national risk mitigation through their commitment to powering lives in Africa and beyond. Businesses and organisations alike need to do their part in ensuring the survival of the most vulnerable communities – both now, and in the future.
