History is made … 3D implant done at Life Cosmos Hospital
A large piece of bone on his skull had to be removed to allow space for his brain to swell outside of his skull
An assault by an unknown men left a gaping hole in Donald Malika’s head.
When Donald was admitted to Life Cosmos Hospital in August last year his head computed tomography scan showed that he sustained a life-threatening traumatic brain injury which required emergency surgery.
A large piece of bone on his skull had to be removed to allow space for his brain to swell outside of his skull.
After a few months, this hole had to be filled to protect Donald’s brain.
A life-changing procedure was done at Life Cosmos Hospital.
Using modern-day technology, neurosurgeon Dr Francois van Niekerk had to replace the ‘defect’ to prevent other complications and to protect Donald’s brain.
He used 3D printing.
