It wasn’t the real deal, but it was a legendary race

Runners and walkers from local clubs completed their own personal journey over whatever distance they have chosen from 5km, 10km, 21.1km or 90km in the true Comrades spirit, to earn their very own genuine ‘Race the Comrades Legends’ medal.

Although not the same, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) presented a virtual race ‘Race the Comrades Legends’ on Sunday, June 14 on what should have been the day on which the 95th Comrades Marathon should have taken place.

With nearly 40 000 entrants from 86 nations participating, runners join in the adventure of being part of this unique and historic opportunity. They literally ran ‘alone but together’ throughout cities and villages in South Africa and around the world to virtually connect, reflect and celebrate the history, heritage and values of the Ultimate Human Race.

“It wasn’t easy to do, but we had support from friends, family and members from the club who cheered us on and we had the feeling that we did it together,” said Carla Steenekamp from Run/Walk for Life.
