Emalahleni women’s structure protesting after shootings
A delegation was chosen to meet with the mayor to clarify the issue of a meeting with Transnet
Women’s Joint Structure decided to embark on a protest after they were allegedly prevented to hold a meeting with Transnet.
This came about after a railway accident involving a train and a truck which collided on Tuesday, July 28 at the railway crossing at Old Coronation near Pap and Vleis.
The protest was held on Friday, August 28.
The different structures from the city said after the accident they engaged with Transnet to find a solution to the problems in the area to prevent further accidents.
According to them a meeting was set with Transnet but they were prevented from entering the municipality building by security officers at the entrance resulting in a shooting incident.
“It came as a surprise to us when we were prevented from entering the building. We were on our way to meet with the mayor about issues of safety at the railway crossing and we wanted to raise our concerns. We failed to understand why we were prevented,” said Ms Irene Masilela of Women’s Joint Structure.
A delegation was chosen to meet with the mayor to clarify the issue of a meeting with Transnet.
According to Ms Masilela they will be given a new date by the executive mayor but they said they want to be involved with any project at the rail crossing to prevent further problems.
They also want to be empowered as women in projects.
A candlelight ceremony was also held during the protest.
