Cleaning up is everyone’s responsibility
A soccer tournament was later held at the same ground on the following day to show community members that the ground is for sports, not a dumping site
A joint effort by the Department of Environment affairs led by Ms Itumeleng Tlou a youth community outreach programme official, volunteers, officials from other departments, local municipality and members of the community embarked on cleaning an area near a school.

Ms Tlou said they choose the ground near Empucukweni Secondary School because children play there and it poses a health risk.
They also embarked on a door to door awareness.
The cleaning campaign was held on Thursday, October 22.

“Working with Thuma Mina participants to clean the area, a door to door educational campaign was also held in the area of KwaGuqa Extension 5 to teach the community members about recycling and the safe disposal of medical waste,” explained Ms Tlou.
A soccer tournament was later held at the same ground on the following day to show community members that the ground is for sports, not a dumping site.

Some community said they will support the idea of cleaning, and they will in future know that they must keep their waste in their yards and wait for collection by the municipality refuse trucks.
