MEC Bonakele Majuba receive smart boards

To date, there are more than 25 000 learners within the province who are taught these subjects on a compulsory basis

Mpumalanga Department of Education received 50 smart boards, and they hope it will improve the pass rate in mathematics, physical science and technology.

The donation of the smart boards worth R5 million was held at the O.R. Tambo Mathematics, Physical Science and Technology Academy on Tuesday, October 27. The donation is from VT Africa Holdings.

The event coincided with the birthdate of OR Tambo who was one of the outstanding mathematics and physical science teachers.

In accepting the smart cards Mpumalanga MEC of Education Bonakele Majuba thanked the business sector for their contributions.

He said in celebrating the life of OR Tambo who would be 103 years if he was still alive want to encourage learners to take mathematics, physical science and technology which are perceived to be difficult subjects.

He said those subjects will assist the learners to prepare them for the fourth industrial revolution.

He also thanked the business sector especially Standard Bank by offering to replace all the stolen items from the academy especially computers and indicated that they have now strengthened security in the academy.

The academy was established in 2013 as a vehicle to increase the intake and pass rate of mathematics, science and technology subjects.

To date, there are more than 25 000 learners within the province who are taught these subjects on a compulsory basis.

In 2019, 357 grade 12 learners passed mathematics as well as 798 learners who passed physical science with distinctions.

There were 25 678 learners who have registered to write pure mathematics and 22 485 to write physical science in the 2020 national senior certificate.

The department in collaboration with HeyMath and HeyScience have zero-rated websites for South Africa henceforth available to all users without any internet or data charges.

All subject advisors in the province have been registered to access and also underwent a one-day training session at the academy on June 25 this year.
