Is it Eloise’s little sister?

A funnel cloud was spotted close to Ga-Nala this past weekend.

Severe weather conditions have had the country in a grip since the tropical cyclone Eloise made landfall in Mozambique in late January.

Even in the Highveld, the weather has had residents scrambling for umbrellas and raincoats.

Mr Russel Venter was travelling close to Ga-Nala on the Secunda and Trichardt crossing on January 30 when he noticed an unusual cloud formation.

WITBANK NEWS asked the experts on the Facebook-group Reënval SA what this was, and they all agreed it is a funnel cloud.

A funnel cloud is a cone-shaped cloud that extends from the base of a cloud towards the ground without actually reaching the surface.

They are formed when a rotating column of wind draws in cloud droplets, making a region of intense low-pressure visible.

They are formed in the same way as a tornado building around this localised area of intensely low pressure and are typically associated with the formation of cumulonimbus thunderclouds.
