After-tears-party turns out to be a superspreader event

Community members behaved unruly, wore no masks and practised no social distancing

An after-tears-party went sour this weekend when it spiralled out of control and police had to step in.

The party goers did not adhere to and abide by the national disaster management protocols set in place by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

After a funeral at Clewer earlier on February 20, funeral-goers gathered in Ackerville for some loud music, spinning cars and an evening of fun without masks or social distancing in place.

“Certain community members behaved unruly, thus conflicting with the lockdown regulations by conducting an aftertears event, spinning cars and not wearing masks, nor practised social distancing. The community also did not want to heed the call by police when they were urged to stop with their activities and this is a worrying factor as their conduct was depicting a degree of lawlessness and danger,” said provincial police spokesperson Brig Leonard Hlathi.
