Four arrested for illegally tampering with municipal infrastructure

On Tuesday, February 23 four people were arrested and appeared in Witbank Magistrate’s Court for allegedly connecting electricity illegally.

The municipal law enforcement unit continued with its operations of arresting suspects who are illegally tampering with municipal infrastructure.

Recently they invaded Thala in Thushanang with their operation.

On Tuesday, February 23 four people were arrested and appeared in Witbank Magistrate’s Court for allegedly connecting electricity illegally.

The four are: Winnie Kwete (47) of house number 922 Thushanang Extension 4, Martin Petros Mlangeni (44) of house number 848 Thushanang Extension 4, Ndumiso Mashigo (38) of house number 860/29 Thushanang Extension 4 and Valeria Kabi of house number 913 Thushanang Extension 4.

All four owes the municipality substantial amounts which are in arrears on their municipal accounts.

According to Brigadier Danisile Motha all four people have their houses installed with pre-paid metering from 1999, 2010 and 2012 and there is no record of electricity purchase which raises the suspicion that they have been consuming electricity illegally.

Their charges falls under a schedule 5 offence Criminal Matter Amendment Act (No 18 of 2016) section 3(1)(a), for tampering with infrastructure.

They were remanded in custody after their cases were enrolled, and they will appear again on March 4 for a formal bail application.
