‘No more RDP houses for now’ – MEC Speedy Mashilo
MEC Speedy Mashilo says government will provide people with stands instead of RDP houses from now onwards

Mpumalanga MEC for Human Settlement Speedy Mashilo says the government won’t provide people with RDP houses any time soon.
MEC Mashilo said the main cause of this is because there is an enormous housing problem in the process of providing people with houses in the province so far.

He further said that the government is going to provide people with empty stands to build houses for themselves, instead of the government building for them.
“Our approach is to get the land services so that we can provide people with stands. Therefore with this initiative we encourage people to build houses for themselves, because the government is working on a tight budget and it will never finish building houses for people anytime soon. Another thing which led to this approach is because the number of people who are demanding RDP houses grows every day, and this pushes the government into a deep hole of debts. Hence that’s why the government came to the decision of providing people with stands to build for themselves,” said Mashilo.
Mashilo said this on Thursday, August 12 when he and the Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane and Emalahleni Executive Mayor Cllr Linah Malatjie were handing over a house to Gogo Martha Motjomabe (70) at Siyaqoba as part of honouring and celebrating Woman’s Month.
Mashilo concluded by saying that for now the government has built over 4 700 houses in Siyaqoba at the moment. Therefore the government is not in a good space of continuing with a project of providing people with houses, for now.
Mashilo advised people who are in need of houses to start saving because they will be provided with stands to build houses for themselves.
