Ga-Nala is ready to recycle glass too

Put your trash in the can

The #CommunityCleanUpKriel project is taking another step forward.

Ms Lezelle Otto, who started the clean-up project in the small Highveld town Ga-Nala said they started recycling glass.

“After meetings with Emalahleni Local Municipality wherein the importance of recycling and job creation were discussed, the municipality adopted this project and gave us premises from where the recycling can be done,” Lezelle said.

She said she will be speaking to schools shortly so that wheelie bins can be placed at the schools’ premises for glass.

“We aim to rid Ga-Nala of glass lying everywhere and turning it into money for our volunteers.”

Lezelle told WITBANK NEWS that gardening services came onboard and adopted recreational parks.

The gardening services pledged to give one hour a week to clean the park they have adopted.

A local informal settlement is also starting to clean up their litter as Lezelle provides them with garbage bags and removes all their garbage regularly.

“I told the volunteers that they should be proud of where they live and clean up the litter for a healthier environment for their children. We now have 15 women from the informal settlement cleaning up and teaching the younger ones to recycle.”

In exchange for the garbage bags and the removal of the rubbish the 15 women go into Ga-Nala once a week and helps cleaning up the town.

Lezelle already donated a swing to the children to play on and is busy getting material together to build a beautiful playground for the children in the informal settlement.

She said the household pledges are going well as households give R50 a month to help pay the volunteers. Businesses are also onboard and without them, Lezelle said, this project would not have been the success the town can brag about.

“If you do not like the way things are, don’t complain, change it,” she concluded.
