Fifty-two houses left without power in Klarinet – residents must pay for repairs
Residents in Klarinet are concerned that the municipality has not investigated the cause of the explosion that resulted in the transformer tripping

Residents of Extension 4 in Klarinet are left in the dark after the transformer burnt that affected 52 houses in the area.
The community has been without electricity since September 30 and according to them, there has been no assistance from Emalahleni Local Municipality.
According to the residents that are affected, they appointed community representatives to take the serious matter to the municipality and were allegedly told to pay R800 per household to the municipality before they can be assisted.
The community is concerned that the municipality has not investigated the cause of the explosion that resulted in the transformer tripping.
Further on the community stated that the municipality replaced a transformer in a nearby area in Klarinet that affected another 62 houses; this after residents paid R800 per household to the municipality.
They fear that without knowing the cause of the explosion, they will find themselves in a similar situation again and be expected to pay a lump sum of money to repair it.
Klarinet is not the only area in the City of Coal affected by exploding transformers.
Areas such as Vosman and Empumelelweni too are affected.
The municipality’s MMC for Technical Services, Mduduzi “Mswati” KaNkosi addressed the issue during ‘Emalahleni FM’ on September 28.
“The municipality is charging a community for repairs because it’s the community that overloads the system and causes the transformers to trip and explode, however, we cannot confirm that it is the case with Klarinet,” said Nkosi.
WITBANK NEWS reached out to the spokesperson of the municipality, Mr Lebo Mofokeng but is still waiting on feedback.
“As soon as I get all relevant information on this issue I will come back to the media with a comment,” Mofokeng concluded.
