GBV pandemic battle needs to be won
Booklets are given to members of the community to teach them about GBV.
Gender-based Violence (GBV) and femicide is a battle that is faced on a daily basis in South Africa. Many women are killed by people that they know which is quite alarming. On Wednesday, September 29 Emalahleni Local Municipality Transversal Unit along with FOVOC, Department of Health and Seriti hosted an awareness campaign and dialogue for men and women in Klarinet. The initiative was hosted at Klarinet community hall in Ext.6. Many topics concerning domestic violence were discussed and public health workers and social workers engaged with members of the community. Other issues concerning health, mental issues and the Covid-19 were fully elaborated.

The initiative also provided stations where people could do health checks and could get vaccinated. A lot of concerns and myths around the Covid-19 vaccination were discussed and health practitioners were able to Nomfanelo Khube from the Transversal Unit said that she was happy with the outcome which shows that people are willing to fight against GBV and also educate themselves about the vaccine.
“We will be having more of these dialogues to teach people that GBV is a serious issue and affects both women and children. Many children are affected and this is shown by how they behave and interact with other children,” said Cllr. Qondi Maseko, MMC and Ward 13 councillors.
Members of the community were also given booklets that would aid them in detecting signs of domestic violence in their neighbourhood. Read More:
