Cash-in- transit robbery – cash van was bombed

All hell broke loose as the cash-in-transit robbers opened fire on the N4/N12 split.

Two security guards and two police officers were injured during a cash-in-transit heist over the weekend.

Sergeant CM Mosenogi was shot several times  and Sergeant NF Tolo was shot in the left thigh and stomach. The two Fidelity Security Guards were injured during the accident when the security van was bombed on Saturday, November 27.

According to a police report the sergeants together with a colleague, Sergeant VK Mahlangu, who are all part of Middelburg Flying Squad were patrolling the N4 towards eMalahleni.

Just before they reached the N4/N12 off ramp they saw vehicles that were driving in front of them making U-turns and driving back with their hazards on.

At first they thought there was an accident because of a burning car. Just as they approached the burning car they realised that someone was shooting at them .

Caught in the rain of bullets they had no other option but to get out of the police vehicle and run for cover.

As the heavily armed robbers got closer Sergeant Mosenogi took her bullet proof vest off and covered her head. That is when the robbers opened fire once more and shot her several times in the upper body.

Two trucks and a car were also caught in the middle as the bullets flew. Luckily nobody was injured.

The robbers burned the two Mercedes’s they used to pull off the heist when they left the scene and took an undisclosed amount of money with them.

As the screams for help echoed over Zello, tow in trucks, community policing forum members and police rushed to the scene.

Ambulances were dispatched and the injured were taken to Emalahleni Private Hospital.
