60-year-old grandma still waiting for a place to stay

Mthethwa said that she left her curtains at the house as she left in a hurry and was scared

When Ms Samaria Anna Mthethwa (60) received the long-awaited house for her and her family in Siyanqoba, she was ecstatic.

Her dream of owning a house was however short-lived as she was told a month later to vacate it as the rightful owner of the house had arrived.

According to Mthethwa it all started in July this year when she was handed a photocopy of her ID and were told that the other documents will follow later and were told to occupy house number 1261.

In August she was called to the municipal offices together with a relative and was told that the owner of the house has arrived.

“I was told to wait outside the office while the municipal official was dealing with the matter. Later I was told not to allow anybody to move into the house. I was surprised when the so-called owner of the house told me to vacate the house. I was afraid and scared because I was alone in the house and did what I was told. Later I was told by the municipality officials that my house was in the process of being built and I was given number 885 which I’m not sure whether it does exist. I’m back to square one without a house. I have applied for a house since 2017 and is still on the waiting list,” said the disappointed Mthethwa.

Mthethwa added to say that she left her curtains at the house as she left in a hurry and was scared.

She says she does not have any problems with the house owner but feels that she was let down by the municipality officials in the housing department.

An official from the provincial department explained that it was not true that Mthethwa was evicted from ‘her house’ ‒ she is still on the waiting list.

“A contractor is busy building 1 000 allocated houses and thereafter he will build another 100 houses. Ms Mthethwa’s house is among those 100 houses to be built; she will be made a priority because she is old. Her house has been approved and she will get her house in due time. We have tried several times to explain to her and her family about the process,” said the official.
