Safety tips and awareness on the roads for athletes
Some roads are busier at certain times of the day than other times, cyclists should choose their time and route wisely.

In light of the death of two local cyclists who died recently while out riding their bikes, WITBANK NEWS asked well-known athlete Patrice Gautier to share some safety tips.
According to Patrice the best clothing to wear when cycling, running or walking is yellow, green and orange.
They are bright and people associate them with people that normally work on our road and thus have more caution.
Lights on the rear of your bicycle should also be solid and not flicker.
Cyclists should also choose their time and route wisely.
Some roads are busier at certain times of the day than other times.
“The morning traffic might be more concentrated in one direction than the other and vice versa, so chose your cycling route wisely,” said Patrice.
Riding laps or the same route regularly is not always that bad.
If you do it often and are friendly to other road users, they eventually know that that road is used by other people and are more aware of you.
“The passing of our fellow cyclists was a very big shock to us all. I’ve known Susan. She was always smiling and had time for everyone,” said Patrice. (Read full story in WITBANK NEWS, Friday, January 28).
At this stage, there are many athletes on the roads in eMalahleni.
They are either training for the South African Championships that is around the corner or the full Ironman.
If they are not training for any race, many are on the roads just to keep fit.
