Policewoman gives newborn new hope

A newborn baby was given a second chance.

Sergeant Nonhlanhla Monama from Phola Police Station saved the life of a newborn baby.

On Thursday, February 3, Monama who is part of the Crime Information Management Analysis Centre (CIMAC) at the police station received a call from Ms Gladness Lephutha from the local Community Police Forum (CPF) substructure.

Lephutha informed Monama that a newborn baby was found between Mabelane’s Place and the Old Roman Church.

With swift response from the police, Lephutha and Sergeant Mojalefa Manaka arrived on the scene where they discovered the newly born baby was covered in a blanket with the umbilical cord still attached to her.

Upon further investigation, Monama realised that the newborn was still breathing, but was running out of breath at that any delay might cause the baby to lose her life.

She immediately rushed the little girl to the clinic.

The swift decision paid off as the baby was examined at Phola Clinic and survived.

The clinic later confirmed that the baby is in stable condition and in good health.

A case has been opened at Phola Police Station for child neglect. The social workers from Witbank Christian Social Council (CSC) were contacted to fetch the baby and took her to a place of safety.

No arrest was made so far, but the police are investigating this matter.
