Fraud throws a spanner in construction work

Fraud spikes through the roof in eMalahleni - Be aware

A man allegedly became a victim of fraud on June 10 after he paid a sum of money to a construction business.

Allegedly, the victim deposited an amount of money to a construction business on June 10. It is believed that the business had to do work for the victim, and told him that he has to pay an outstanding amount before they can commence with work. It is believed that the victim tried to contact the business, but was unsuccessful.

Among others, the South African Police Service provides the following tips to prevent falling victim to scams and fraud: Never provide your online ID, password or PIN to anyone and never write them down or share them.

Put sensible transaction limits on your accounts.

Only provide your credit card details to reputable companies.

If it looks too good to be true, it usually is.

Never send money or give credit card or online account details to anyone you do not know and trust.

Community members are warned to guard against fraudsters; some may just laugh all the way to the bank with their victim’s money.
